Your liver is incredibly important to your health. The fact that it has over 500 functions in the human body attests to that fact!
Unfortunately, many people develop weak or impaired livers due to unhealthy lifestyles that involve lack of exercise, smoking, drinking too much, and eating processed food. The environmental pollution that we live in is an additional burden on our livers.
Some people even develop diseased livers, which is a bad state of health to be in. Diabetes and alcoholism are the most common causes of liver disease.
So if your liver is weak, is there anything that will help revitalize it? Perhaps coffee?
Is Coffee Good for Your Liver?
There are many therapeutic natural remedies that help revitalize liver tissue and help cleanse the liver. And now there’s word that coffee might help reverse liver damage. But is it true?
Many of us love drinking coffee. It uplifts our mood, helps us feel energized, and adds to our productivity. So wouldn’t it be great if coffee could also help our livers? Well, let’s find out if it does!
The Research On Coffee And The Liver
Why are there rumors that coffee helps protect the liver? Well, in 2016, a large review of 9 studies on coffee consumption and liver disease risk showed that drinking two more cups of coffee a day can decrease your risk of liver cirrhosis by 44% 1.
Researchers summarize - “increasing coffee consumption may substantially reduce the risk of cirrhosis” 1. The take-away from this study is that people with liver disease could especially benefit from drinking coffee, because it might prevent liver disease from developing into the dangerous late stages.
It’s uncertain whether coffee would “reverse” liver damage, but it looks like it certainly lowers your chance of developing liver disease.
And coffee has other benefits to the liver. Evidence suggests it can boost liver function because it improves the levels of liver enzymes that signals how healthy the liver is 2.

Why Would Coffee Be Good For Your Liver?
Typically, your liver loves antioxidants because they protect your liver cells from damage and also fight inflammation that can trigger damage to the liver. The antioxidants in coffee likely play a role in fighting oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver 3.
Coffee is made from beans, after all, that are packed with antioxidants.
Researchers have hypothesized many other liver-bolstering effects of coffee including the possibility that the drink influences enzymes that affect tissue repair and also prevents the buildup of fat in the liver (which is a sign of liver disease) 3,4.
If you want to use coffee to best benefit your liver, you should, ideally:
- Drink certified organic coffee that is free from toxic synthetic pesticides. (Some coffee has many pesticides in it.)
- Drink coffee that hasn’t been over-roasted, as coffee that is cooked too much loses antioxidant power and harmful compounds are generated.
